Women’s World Cup: Can England Claim the Crown?

The Lionesses brought the nation to a standstill in 2022 as they secured England’s first major trophy since 1966 with a 2-1 extra-time win over Germany. They will be hoping to go one step further in Australia and New Zealand this summer, but a plethora of world class nations stand in their way.

You can’t take anything away from England’s Euro 2022 victory, but they will now have to do it on an even bigger stage, with back-to-back World Cup winners USA the team to topple. The four-time champions have dominated on the world stage for the best part of a decade, reaching three successive World Cup finals since 2011.

However, England travel down under with a very strong squad. There are some notable omissions, namely Beth Mead due to injury and Ellen White following her retirement, but there is more than enough quality in the Lionesses squad for them to go all the way.

Midfielder Keira Walsh become the most expensive player in women’s football when she moved to Barcelona, while striker Alessia Russo was subject to another world record bid before eventually moving to Arsenal on a free transfer. That’s not to mention the rock-solid back four featuring Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, and captain Leah Williamson.

Sarina Wiegman’s side have been dealt a tough, but favourable group featuring China, Denmark and Haiti. None of those nations feature in the top 10 in the world rankings, with Denmark (13) and China (14) closest. The Lionesses will be firm favourites to navigate the group unscathed, but the knockout stages is where the competition awaits.

USA are the obvious threat, but eight-time European champions Germany, Alexia Putellas’ Spain, and Sam Kerr’s Australia will also be cause for concern. Despite the strong field, England will fancy their chances of coming out on top after their spectacular Euro 2022 triumph.

Tournament Betting Tips

England to win the World Cup – 3.10

England arguably have the most well-rounded squad in the tournament, which also happens to feature a number of the world’s best players. Spearheaded by superstar striker Alessia Russo and organised by the defensive stalwart Leah Williamson, it could be the Lionesses’ time to shine.

Germany to reach the final – 4.33

Germany are consistently competing at the back end of tournaments. They might not have reached a World Cup final since 2007, but they have made three European Championship finals in that time. They fell just short at the hands of England last summer but we expect them to be right back in the running once again.
