UFC Kansas City brings the Octagon to the Delta Center on Saturday night with a welterweight clash that saved the day when the original main event was cancelled due to injury.
Fans were due to see former champion Jamahal Hill against recent contender Khalil Rountree Jr in an exciting light-heavyweight clash. However, when Rountree pulled out and the bout was rescheduled for Baku this summer, Ian Machado Garry stepped up to take on the fast-rising welterweight contender Carlos Prates and save the main event.
Irishman Garry is a divisive figure with fans, while Prates is a member of the wildly popular Fighting Nerds stable out of Brazil. It has made for a fascinating build-up between two camps who appear to be building some legitimate bad blood after initial respect for both men stepping up on short notice.
Garry has struggled to find the finishes in his last few fights, and even lost last time out to Shavkat Rakhmonov in a title eliminator at UFC 310. That problem has not persisted for Prates, who has yet to see past the second round in his Octagon career to date, with four knockouts from four thus far.
Their meeting is not the only fascinating one on this card; Anthony Smith ends his lengthy career with a light-heavyweight clash against Mingyang Zhang. Giga Chikadze is also back out against David Onama, and the acrobatic showman Michel Pereira faces Abus Magomedov in a middleweight showdown.

UFC Kansas City Betting Preview and Best Bets
There are a number of intriguing markets available for this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Kansas City.
Let’s take a look at the many markets offered for the main event. There are basically two schools of thought if you look at this fight objectively; you think Prates will knock Garry out or you think Garry will submit Prates. If there’s a decision, it’s going to go to the Irishman, next to no questions asked.
Either way, we’d recommend the Winning Method Double Chance market. If you think Prates wins, you go for him by KO/TKO/DQ or Submission at 31/20. If you fancy Garry, you’ll want the submission or decision line at 6/4. Prates’ six career defeats have all been by submission of some description, save for one decision.
The main event going less than 3.5 rounds seems to us like free money at 3/4, but you’d have to be cautious of Garry wanting to wear his rival out.
At the UFC level of MMA, you should always be looking at any fight where odds are as wide as Jaqueline Amorim (11/100) vs Polyana Viana (11/2). This is women’s strawweight MMA, so just because Amorim has three finishes on the bounce and Viana is on a losing streak, the underdog is most definitely worth a punt.
Another one worth looking at is Da’Mon Blackshear vs Heili Alateng. Blackshear is on a submission streak, and that price for him to get a third in a row at 9/5 looks pretty tasty to us.
